No Such Thing as Failure

It’s occurred to me lately that there may actually be no such thing as failure. In any given situation, if you try, and maybe try again, and then again, and maybe even again, you can always eventually succeed. Even if not right then in that very moment, you are taking strides in the right direction by trying. That, in itself, is a success.

What do you feel like you’ve failed at? Your weight loss? A job? A relationship? Training for a race? Whatever it is, you haven’t failed. You just haven’t gotten where you thought you’d be. There is no true way to fail except to give up. But even then, you can change your mind and try again. So, failure is futile. You just can’t do it. Or perhaps, the only thing you can fail at, is failing itself.

Perhaps this is a bit existential. But I’ve realized that by taking a chance, which is often when we think we fail when things don’t work out exactly as planned, you are already succeeding. By making a conscious effort, and therefore opening up the possibility of a perceived potential failure (by seeking growth, progress, success…) …you have already succeeded in taking a step forward.

Imagine if we went into every situation knowing we could not fail. That with enough effort and enough belief in ourselves, we could achieve anything. Would be pretty great, wouldn’t it?

Just some food for thought. In case you still need convincing, Oprah agrees with me.

Have you ever felt like you failed, but then turned it around? What do you consider your greatest success?
